Funk Family Upstander Speaker Series: Derek Black and Matthew Stevenson
Derek Black is the son of a grand wizard of the Ku Klux Klan. Matthew Stevenson is an Orthodox Jew. Derek was taught to hate everything Matthew stood for. When their paths crossed in college and Derek was outed as a member of the white nationalist movement, Matthew invited him to Shabbat dinner, offering him a chance to learn more about the people he hated. Derek ultimately renounced white nationalism, and both men continue to speak out about the dangers of blind hatred.
The Dallas Holocaust and Human Rights Museum's Upstander Speaker Series highlights Upstanders: those who stand up for other people and their rights, combat injustice, inequality, or unfairness, and, when they see something wrong, work to make it right.
