Dallas, TX, November 11, 2014– Music Together Dallas is pleased to announce the Uncle Gerry Family Concert to benefit the Joel Shickman Children’s Music Fund on Sunday, November 16th from 3:30 to 5:00 PM at the Levine Academy, 18011 Hillcrest Rd, Dallas 75252.
The late Joel Shickman, or “Mr. Joel” as his littlest musical protégés called him, believed in the healing power of music. In his memory, Music Together of Dallas presents the Uncle Gerry Family Concert benefiting the Joel Shickman Children’s Music Fund. All of the proceeds from the concert will go toward the Fund, which allows families battling childhood cancer, other chronic illnesses, or developmental delays to bring all of their children to Music Together® classes for free.
“Everyone between the ages of zero and 120 is invited,” says Gila Vinokur, owner and director of Music Together of Dallas. “Uncle Gerry will sing and dance and we’ll have an incredible musical time while raising funds for a wonderful cause in Joel’s memory.” The concert is perfect for families with children of all ages, and will feature dynamic singer/performer Gerry Dignan performing favorite Music Together songs. Known as “Uncle Gerry” to the millions of families who have taken Music Together classes since 1987, Gerry is a recording artist on the award-winning Music Together CDs.
Joel’s true calling to teach music was awakened when he became a father. When his first son was old enough, Joel signed up for a Music Together class. Soon, Joel was a Music Together teacher. Mr. Joel was a magnet to children and parents alike. Joel Shickman died in November 2007 of leukemia. During his illness, there were jam sessions around his hospital bed and he played his guitar daily. Joel’s sons were 2, 5 and 8 when he died. They remember the learning, the love, the silliness and they remember the music.
The Joel Shickman Children’s Music Fund will bring the healing power of music to families who need it most. It will heal them and unite them in unbreakable ways. It will be Joel’s song.
The Music Together® program is an internationally renowned music and movement program dedicated to nurturing every child's innate musicality. While making music is a joyful activity valuable for its own sake, preschool children have shown gains in language, cognitive, physical, social and emotional development - reinforcing the idea that Music Together supports all future learning.
